Trading during Market Hours is constant. Buyers and sellers match up one at a time throughout the day. Trading at the Open and Close happens all at once. This makes it a different animal entirely. At the Open, every order the exchange has sitting on its books from outside market hours gets matched up to create one gigantic opening trade execution.
