One famous character who made money this way in the 1929 crash was speculator Jesse Lauriston Livermore. Starting humbly as a chalkboard boy at Paine Webber, he began looking for patterns in the market and making imaginary bets that earned him fortunes in his diary. By age 16, he was playing with real money as a successful stock trader.

And with a lot of personal problems, he ended up committing suicide. Born in 1877 to a very poor family, Jesse Livermore traded his way to success in the Wall Street. He made more than $100 million during the 1929 bear market. He anticipated the great bear market and took huge short positions before the market crash.

The financial outcome of the crash was devastating. Between September 1 and November 30, 1929, the stock market lost over one-half its value, dropping from $64 billion to approximately $30 billion. Any effort to stem the tide was, as one historian noted, tantamount to bailing Niagara Falls with a bucket.
